LED screens: the essentials
What is an LED screen?
A professional LED screen is a display surface made of thousands of red, green and blue light-emitting diodes grouped into modules that generate light and image themselves. Assembled without bezels, these modules form video walls of any size, bright and durable, used in corporate, retail, event and outdoor settings. Unlike a TV, it is sized to measure according to viewing distance and environment.
What is the difference between an LED, LCD and OLED/QLED screen?
A direct-view LED screen creates the image with its own diodes, enabling giant bezel-free formats and very high brightness, up to several thousand nits outdoors. An LCD screen, QLED included, filters a backlight through liquid crystals and is limited to fixed-size panels with visible bezels in video walls. OLED delivers perfect blacks on panels under 100 inches, but its brightness and lifespan under intensive use are poorly suited to 24/7 professional installations.
How does an LED screen work?
Each pixel of an LED screen combines a red, a green and a blue diode whose intensity varies to reproduce every colour. A video controller (Novastar, Brompton, Colorlight) receives the source signal, splits it and sends it to each module's receiving card, which drives the diodes hundreds of times per second. The distance between two pixels, called pixel pitch, sets the ideal viewing distance: the finer it is, the closer you can look at the screen.
How much does an LED display cost to purchase?
The purchase price of a professional LED display primarily depends on the pixel pitch, surface area, and environment. In 2026, the hardware alone ranges from 1,200 to 2,200 € HT/m² for outdoor long-distance (8 to 16 mm), 1,800 to 3,000 € HT/m² for standard indoor (2.9 to 3.9 mm), 3,000 to 5,500 € HT/m² for high-definition indoor (1.9 to 2.6 mm), and 6,000 to 12,000 € HT/m² for fine pitch (0.9 to 1.5 mm). Additionally, consider the video processor (2,000 to 15,000 €), the support structure (150 to 600 €/m²), and calibration (800 to 3,000 €). Example: a 20 m² wall with a 2.6 mm pixel pitch costs 36,000 to 60,000 € HT for hardware alone, or 55,000 to 90,000 € HT installed. Request a free quote for a customized estimate for your project.
